WATCH: Lewis Hamilton BAFFLED after Lando Norris reveals McLaren opted to not put mediums on his fin
The British GP saw the top three spots being locked out by Brits. This excited the home crowd that a British 1-2-3 might be on the cards for the race day. However, as the race kicked into gear, it became exponentially worse for Lando Norris, who was leading the race for quite a bit but ended the event in P3 due to a strategic blunder. This resulted in Lewis Hamilton being baffled over how McLaren had missed out on a crucial detail.
George Russell led the Brits into the village section. However, as the race progressed, the Mercedes began slowing down and was susceptible to the McLaren pair behind. This resulted in Lando Norris inheriting the lead, who looked set to win his first British GP.
On the other hand, the weather had left the McLaren garage scratching their heads as they were indecisive on what tires they should put on the lead car.
Despite the team having a fresh set of mediums, Norris and the team agreed to get a set of scrubbed softs to cover off Lewis Hamilton. However, he was overtaken on the pit exit as his senior compatriot undercut him for the race win.
To further rub salt in his wounds, he was unable to match the 39-year-old’s pace and was overtaken by the Red Bull of Max Verstappen. This left Hamilton shocked, as when he questioned Norris in the cooldown room regarding his strategy, the latter agreed regarding the strategic blunder.
Lando Norris was unhappy after losing the race victory
On one hand, the 24-year-old had agreed to put on softs to cover the threat of the 39-year-old. However, his teammate was asked a similar question and Oscar Piastri immediately decided to get a set of mediums. Witnessing his wrong discernment, the McLaren driver was unhappy with the consequences.
Norris cut out as an extremely frustrated figure after losing out on a potential home win.
I'm fed up with saying I should have done better. I don't care about should have, we should have won today. I won't settle for anything less that we should have won the race. Lost more points to Max. Won't be happy with that.Lando Norris said in the post-race interview hosted by Jenson Button
The Brit admitted that he was tired of losing a victory again. He further reiterated that he should have won today, and conceded points to the Dutchman in the championship, which acted as a double blow for him.
Despite being dejected, the Brit is the closest rival to Verstappen in the championship. Moreover, Red Bull is anticipated to be in trouble after the summer break. Thus, Norris might still have a chance to steal a few wins from the clutches of his rivals and make a comeback.
