Shooter killed after firing rounds at KOA Campground
MERIDIAN, Idaho (CBS2) — Meridian Police says a man is dead after firing rounds at a KOA RV campground near Pennwood Street and Meridian Road early Monday.
Officers were called to the area for a report of shots fired shortly after 3:30 a.m. Monday. Officers from the Boise Police Department, Meridian Police Department and Ada County Sheriff's Office responded.
According to the Meridian Police Department, the shooter - a man in his 60's - was firing rounds "indiscriminately from a trailer" when they arrived. In order to put a stop to his actions and safely evacuate people in the area, a Boise Police officer fired a shot.
Two other Boise PD officers fired their guns after BPD says the man attempted to fire his gun after he was struck the initial time. The three BPD officers, all of whom were wearing body cameras, are now on paid administrative leave, per policy.
“We value the sanctity of human life, and no Boise Police Officer takes the use of deadly force lightly. Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased,” said Boise Police Chief Ryan Lee. “All of the officers at the scene are trained to respond to people in mental health crisis and regularly are able to de-escalate situations, but due to the ongoing and obvious danger presented by the suspect, the officers involved had a moral and ethical obligation to intervene.
It's believed the suspect shot his gun dozens of times. A nearby trailer was also struck.
"Fortunately, no officers or surrounding citizens were injured during the incident," Meridian PD said.
Garden City PD is now the lead agency. The Ada County Coroner's Office will identify the suspect at a later time.
