Riot Making Huge LoL Ranked Changes In Patch 14.15

Publish date: 2024-07-21

In a long dev post, Riot has unveiled their upcoming changes in Ranked for LoL Patch 14.15.

Since Riot announced last year that 2024 will be a three Split Ranked system for League of Legends, it was an interesting decision. Using that as a base, they have reworked the ability to make gameplay changes, future adaptations and more.

Riot has been closely monitoring the Ranked system as further iterations to the Ranked systems are coming. Here is all that Riot has revealed so far.

Ranked Changes Patch 14.15

There are multiple changes coming to Ranked as Riot is attacking issues on different fronts. Let’s talk about each of these changes briefly and understand why Riot is going down this route.

New Ranked Requirement For New Accounts

As the heading says, Riot is changing or rather adjusting the requirement to play Ranked with a new account. Firstly, they are changing the requirement from playing 10 games of any non-Ranked games to playing 10 Summoner’s Rift Normal games.

As Riot Phroxzon explained, a lot of the new accounts are using ARAMs and other game modes to circumvent the requirement and jump into ranked. That goes against the idea of why the rule was placed in the beginning, so Riot is making adjustments to it with a simple requirement change.

Queue Declining

Riot has been addressing queue issues for a while with changes to Queue Dodging, Punishments, and the like. However, one thing that is being abused right now is the Decline Button Abuse. This is where players are actively declining queues consecutively.

This has been deemed as a disruptive behavior by Riot and rightfully so. It causes quite a few problems for other players looking for queues as they are constantly in this cycle of finding people for their matchmaking ELO. To address this, Riot is going to roll out the following measures.

So the first two are pretty straightforward, Riot is just reducing how many declines you can do in a row without getting punishment. So if players decline multiple times (more than 2), then Riot will lock the player out of the queue itself.

The specifics and exact numbers are still unclear and I am expecting Riot to wait until the Patch notes come out to unveil the details of these changes. As for what I think, these changes have been a long time coming and we should expect Riot to keep working on this space consistently.
