Alain Delon is currently 87 years old. He was born in Sceaux, France, on November 8, 1935. Delon’s parents, Édith and Fabien Delon divorced when he was four years old. Delon has a half-sister and two half-brothers, and both remarried. He was educated in a Roman Catholic boarding school. This was the first school from which he was expelled due to poor behavior. Delon dropped out of school when he was 14 years old. He subsequently spent some time working at his stepfather’s butcher business. Three years later, he joined the French Navy. He participated as a fusilier marin in the First Indochina War in 1953 and 1954.

Career

Delon appeared in the 1949 short film Le Rapt as a criminal involved in an abduction. Delon returned to France in 1956, following his navy duty in Saigon, and worked as a waiter, porter, secretary, and sales assistant. During this period, he met actress Brigitte Auber and accompanied her to the Cannes Film Festival, where his film career began. A talent scout for American producer David O. Selznick saw Delon in Cannes. Selznick gave him a contract after a screen test on the condition that he learn English.  Delon was cast in the comedy Women Are Weak (1959).

This was a tremendous smash in France and the first of Delon’s pictures to be shown in the United States. To promote the film, Delon made a few personal appearances in New York. Delon then went on to make two films that cemented his worldwide fame. In 1960, he starred in René Clément’s Plein Soleil, which was published in the United States as Purple Noon and was based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Delon received tremendous accolades for his depiction of protagonist Tom Ripley; Highsmith admired his performance.

Producer Jacques Bar was working on a heist picture with Jean Gabin, titled Any Number Can Win (1963), with MGM support. Jean-Louis Trintignant was supposed to be Gabin’s co-star until Delon petitioned Bar for the part. Instead of direct compensation, he accepted the film’s distribution rights in specific regions. Because this had never been done in France previously, it was dubbed “Delon’s method.”
